Transforming Concepts into Reality with Superior Lightweight Construction Methods

Now under construction, the $24 million Gateway Building for Trinity College is set to become a world class facility, featuring an auditorium, laboratories, art gallery and studio spaces for media drama.

In highlighting the creative nature of the project, McIldowie Partners Architects produced innovative internal design concepts, with suspended unique cranked ceiling and wall features. But a design without a feasible construction method is only a concept…and that’s when SBS Group became involved to meet the construction challenge.

With a long history in developing smarter pre-fabricated solutions, SBS Ultra Frame technology was used to extensively analyse the design. The result was an alternative lightweight cranked support framing solution for the MDF feature panelling – an easier and simpler method for on site installation while retaining the full architectural vision and functionality.

Notable advantages of the system include:

1. Replacing traditional suspension systems with an all in one accurate framing profile enabling products to be directly fixed too

2. Traditional support steel and secondary furring channels eliminated – saving cost and trade installation processes

3. Ability to install large sections of the complex ceiling at a time, over against the labourous and tedious piece by piece method

Alongside the builder, the team at SBS Group are coordinating the design and construct of the support framing including full shop drawings and frame layouts, engineering design, computations and 1507 certification through to off site fabrication and delivery.
